on the internet: “changing religion”

Americans not losing their religion, but changing it often - CNN.com.

I buzzed through this article, but I’m not really sure what to make of it. To me, shifting from denomination to denomination isn’t “changing religion,” it’s changing churches.

I grew up in a Methodist church, but since I’ve gone to Robert Morris I’ve been going to an Assemblies of God church. By the standards of this article, I’ve changed my religion. But that’s not really the case at all. I just found a congregation out here that was really awesome and I wanted to be a part of. My core beliefs didn’t change too much, aside from a little infusion of Pentecostalism. Should I have viewed this switch as something more than I did? I mean, Methodist doctrine and AoG doctrine do have their points of difference. but once you get past the basics (which pretty much every denomination agrees with), I can handle a lot of different places, because I know who I am and I have a good sense of what is true.

But this isn’t the only part of the article that some potential for interesting commentary. How about the fact that this article seems to equate other religions with different denominations. What does that say about the mindset of the people who did the study and the people who wrote about it?

Weigh in!

Cheers,
Brendan
