on the internet: gay marriage culture wars heat up
I started to write a really long post about the election and gay marriage, and then realized that I was spending more time trying to explain my politics instead of just giving you guys the links!
Two days after the 2008 election, musician Melissa Etheridge wrote an article for the Daily Beast, claiming that she was now declared a second-class citizen. There are lots of holes in her logic, but I’ll let you find them yourself.
Now, Newsweek has come out with a feature article that lays down the Biblical case for gay marriage. I couldn’t believe it. It’s one thing to write a piece about the debate in Biblical scholarship and provide a balanced view of the issue. It’s another entirely to take what is basically an op-ed piece and place it on the cover of a major news magazine.
When Ken wrote about eisegesis, this is an example of the practice at its finest. Here we have someone who clearly wants to accept gay marriage, and thus twists the Scriptures to suit her needs. When Ms. Miller writes,
Would any contemporary heterosexual married couple-who likely woke up on their wedding day harboring some optimistic and newfangled ideas about gender equality and romantic love-turn to the Bible as a how-to script?
Is it not obvious that she is not interested in Ephesians 5 or Song of Solomon? If she isn’t, that’s her prerogative, but to parade this as journalism?
I could spend a lot of time with this article as well, but Baptist heavyweight Dr. Albert Mohler has already done so and has posted an excellent rebuttal on his website. Check it out!
