on the internet: knowledge puffs up?
While I was putting the finishing touches on the article “Concealing Knowledge,” I came across this article, and I thought it was really good. It begins with a reminder that you can’t build a doctrine on one verse, which is why if you read my articles you’ll find that anything I teach with any kind of forcefulness I make sure I have more than one reference. The author notes that people like to take this “knowledge puffs up” passage to mean that knowledge for the sake of knowing is bad - something that I admittedly practice though it is something I don’t really preach.
This article is the defense of the pursuit of knowledge for the sake of knowing more, and its arguments are solid and convincing. It’s great to see a theologian put this passage in its proper perspective and show us what Paul is really trying to say.
